(Wo)Man, Through the Use of (Her) Hands... Can Influence the State of (Her) Own Health'

The above is a famous quote from an OT who taught at USC - Mary Reilly. I've really felt this way this summer. It's been a busy summer. The day before graduation I broke my little toe (well it got me out of walking in the graduation procession) Then on June 27th I had carpal tunnel release on my left hand - the right one is scheduled for August 8th. Between the broken toe and the 1st surgery I took a class in experimental basket weaving and a class in American Sign Languge. I had never done basket weaving before. I found I have a skill for it and very much enjoyed challenging myself.

A double basket.

The "sun" and the "moon" as Herb nick named them. These were a tribute to my mother who was an excellent knitter. She had started a knitting project but was unable to finish it due to developing arthritis. So I incorporated her project into mine. The spirals are a reference to Ireland and ancient burial stones.

The maroon and gray wool on this flat, artistic basket I bought in Ireland the first time I went there in 1984 and never found a use for it, so I dug it up and used it for this project which was about Stonehenge and Ireland and things celtic.

My hand print before surgery - we were making quilt squares at church,

My hand after surgery. I've since had the stitches removed and it's doing well.
