i spent 3 hours yesterday explaining to a statistics graduate student at the university of kentucky - a lovely chinese girl with the american name of Kate, how the middle / junior high school system works here in america, well, not the whole 3 hours, but it did take her some time to grasp that in each teaching period, the teacher has a different set of students. i finally told her that each i.d. number represented a different student/participant, that there were no overlaps. she is very sweet and i hope will be able to help me. we are meeting again next week after she has had time to commune with my data and consult with the head of the statistics department.
on my way to finding Kate, i asked directions of student who happened also to be of chinese heritage. however, when she answer, a lovely eastern kentucky drawl came out - quite strange. Kate has what i would call a chinese accent - clearly english is not her first language although she does quite well with it.
