kentucky fun
last night i took a little break from the dissertation and joe and i went to a new friend's house for a party. trying to find a new place in the dark, and i do mean dark - no street lights, was fun. however, we didn't miss the large metal barn that signified we'd gone too far. after finding the house, we settled in for some good food - polish meatballs with sour kraut in a tomato sauce that was to die for, some fun conversation with the guests - mostly all our age with a couple youngsters thrown in, and the highlight of the evening - playing music and singing. we had an electric key board, a doughbrough (an electric guitar with a resonator), a violin/fiddle, several regular guitars, various drums (i got to play the conga drum - the biggest one!) and various tamborines and castenettes. everyone just throws themself into whole heartedly and some are even pretty good. one of the men, james, just has the best gravely, bluesy voice - perfection. after james sang some bluegrass blues, the rest of sang old favorites from the seventies. a great time was had by all.
