On Wednesday we visited Reel Abilities. I am not sure why I didn't take photos during the presentation that Isaac gave us, but it was excellent. Isaac Zablocki is the director of film programs at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Manhattan (an impressive building/organization). From his role as director of film programs, the ReelAbilities: NY Disabilities Film Festival evolved. From his talk, it sounded like Isaac sort of fell into the disability world but is now fully and passionately involved. Isaac introduced the students to the concepts of a medical model view of disability versus a social view of disability. In the discussion that followed, I could see them integrating the discussion from Heidi's studio with this more formal presentation. It was so rewarding to see a year's worth of work coming to fruition beyond my expectations. Isaac showed us a couple of shorts. First, a man in a wheelchair trying to get home (in New York) and getting there so late he misses his daughter's birthday. The students were well able to relate to this film after several days of traversing the subway system. From Isaac we learned that there are 468 subway stations in NYC and 69 of them are handicap accessible. Second, a young man with Down Syndrome stepping in for his father to interview a future employee - funny, sweet, touching and pointed in it's message. Another perfect choice as on Friday we were going to GiGi's Playhouse who provide services to families and clients with Down Syndrome. ReelAbilities also has an festival in Cincinnati. After ReelAbilities, several of us headed over to see the Guggenheim Museum We cut through Central Park - an oasis of nature in the middle of a big city. Afterwards I had dinner with Melissa and some others at a Sushi restaurant - delicious and fun to see the young ones try something new.
Waiting area in the JCC
The students with me were excited to find this handicap accessible playground.
The Museum of Natural History.
One of the lakes in Central Park.
A castle in Central Park - Melissa's art frequent focuses on flags - the US flag in particular, so I find that I tend to photograph the US flag in many incarnations.
This is Turtle Lake in Central Park. It has many warnings about not walking on the ice and these red rescue ladders are strategically placed all around the lake.
The side of the Metropolitan Museum of Art - our destination on Thursday
The Guggenheim - you can see why I wanted to go here just to appreciate the architecture.
Unfortunately the rotunda was closed to put up a new art exhibit - the good news, admission to the museum was half off.
The large boxes to the right contain the exhibit
Checking out the art.
Contemplating an earlier Picasso
Universal Design was another concept introduced by Isaac and here we see it in person. The left bathroom can be used by anyone - male, female, handicapped.
Taking pictures of the pictures in the photo exhibit.
Guard caught stretching - long days I would guess watching people. A lot of standing around.
Nice to see some 'healthy' food available on the street.
Reflections of sunset in NYC.
The 'eye' motif seemed particularly popular in the subway mosaic art.
A couple of women making and selling their craft in the subway. Yes - the woman on the right has her cat with her on a leash.
This drummer was competing with another artist on the other side of the stairwell.
Cool wall mural by the Hostel.
