Australia - Brisbane

This is one of the many pieces of art work about Brisbane next the river that runs through Brisbane.

Recently Dad ran across these computer diary entries I wrote when we went to Australia. At the time, blogs were not on my radar, it in existence at all. He and I both thought it would be fun to publish some of them. I can't really say for sure who took these pictures, except I'm pretty sure Dad took the ones I am in. : )

1 April 2001

Well what did I expect, it was April Fools Day after all . . . at 4 AM the fire alarms went off. A storage tank on the roof of the hotel sprang a leak sending gallons of water cascading down the elevator shafts (lifts in Aussie) and stairwells. Eventually it also started to seep into the upper story rooms. We, of course, were on the 25th floor. First they told us we could go back to bed, but about 5 minutes later said we were told to come down to the lobby. Walking down 25 flights of wet stairs when jet lagged and sleepy is not much fun. By the time we got to the lobby, hotel staff said the fire fighters had decided it was okay to go back to our rooms…but the lifts were still out of order. I informed the desk clerk I was incapable of walking back UP 25 flights of stairs and she kindly placed me in a 6th floor room for the rest of the evening, I mean morning. Dad, bless him, went up to the 25th floor to fetch my poster and clothes for the conference. After sleeping until 10 AM and waking up with a bit of vertigo, I took another antivert and got dressed. Dad walked over to the Sheraton with me and helped me hang my poster. After attending an afternoon workshop, I walked home. Dad and I went down to the Eagle Pier and dined on the riverfront. The view was beautiful and the restaurant blissfully quiet. When we returned, the lifts were finally working but the living room rug was quite wet, so we spent several days with a large fan in the room to dry it.

View of the conference center from our hotel. You can see the river.

A very tired emme getting ready to hang my poster.
