PaPa's visit

Whenever Dad visits, I use it as an excuse to do some sight seeing. So far we have visited the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Heaven Hill Distillery and the Cumberland Falls. The Cincinnati Art Museum was new to me. It is a lovely museum and free. We also had a very nice lunch in their in house cafe and followed up the museum with dinner at the Cheesecake Factory (Shea loves to get their gluten-free Godiva Chocolate cheesecake). The Heaven Hill distillery was a second visit for me, but on the first visit Joe and I did not get to tour the warehouses due to the possibility of a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms threaten the possibility of a fire (they suffered a bad fire in 1996 - "On November 7, 1996, Heaven Hill's production plant was almost completely destroyed by fire. Several of the company's warehoused were destroyed, and over 90,000 gallons of alcohol were lost."). This time Dad and I and Casey and Matt all got the full tour. I don't think Casey or Matt were too impressed with the 18 year old bourbon. Today Dad and I went down to the Cumberland Falls. This is my third visit I think. So far I have always managed to go in the winter. Today was very nice though - high 50's and clear mixed with clouds.

Shea and me in the mirror and out.

A wonderful exhibit of pottery by two women (M Louise McLaughlin and Maria Longworth Nichols Storer) in the late 1870's who competed with each other to be the best potters and china painters. This pot - the second largest at the time - was made by Maria (Louise made the largest pot). Louise discovered a technique for painting the china under the glaze and wrote a self help book on how to paint china. Marie established the Rookwood Pottery Company which made Cincinnati famous for it's painted china.

The center staircases at the art museum.

Shea trying to escape the camera as usual.

Casey and Dad waiting for lunch (the cafe was quite busy - we waited about an hour to get seated, but did wander about the museum during some of that time).

"Art-y" photo. The 18 year old bourbon - Elijah Craig. By definition, bourbon must be over 51% corn. All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon.

Matt and Casey listening attentively to the tour guide.

Dad taking a picture of the "Confessional Barrel" If you are Catholic the reference should be obvious. The door is cut for tour members to smell the bourbon.

Dad taking photos at Cumberland Falls.

The Falls - the Niagara of the South (these are 68 ft high and Niagara Falls are 169 ft high)
