Berea again with Dad

Dad and I headed down to Berea a couple of days after visiting Maker's Mark. Dad's friend John's mother had done some of her master's research at Berea College some decades ago, so Dad was particularly interested in learning more about Berea College - a small liberal arts college with a fascinating history that I have talked about on this blog before. The founders of Berea took quite literally the bibical statement "God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth,"and so admitted both women and African Americans to their college in a fully integrated manner. For a period of time, they were forced by state and US law to stop having an integrated campus, but these laws were reversed during the 1950s civil rights movement. None of the students pay tuition. They work 10 hours a week or more to help support the college. Currently the college encourages students of differing races and international students but have a special focus on recruiting students from Appalachia. The school sells traditional Kentuckty crafts as one way of supporting their students tuition free.
