Spring Break Ends

Spring break flew by far too fast. Initially the weather was actually spring-like with temperatures in the 60s. All the bulbs are showing themselves and the crocuses are starting to bloom. Early in the week Joe had a doctor's appointment in Lexington and on the way home we checked out Raven Run for future hikes. Looks to be a good place with varied levels of difficulty for hikers. Later in the week Joe and I headed out to Bardstown for a tour of the Heavenly Hill distillery. Bardstown it turns out is as interesting or more so than the distillery. My favorite, it was the home of the man who wrote "My Old Kentucky Home". Heavenly Hill is just one of the local distilleries but the only one that is still truly family owned. Unfortunately we visited on a stormy day and so we weren't allowed to tour the storage facilities for fear of lighting strike. On Sunday we joined our friends Dirk and Catherine to meet Dirk's relatives visiting from Germany. Visiting Dirk usually involves music and moonshine.

An old barn at Raven Run.

An old fashioned soda fountain counter in Bardstown.

The storage facilities, called rick houses, reflected in the visitor center at Heavenly Hill. If you have noticed the creeping black at the bottom of the building at the left of the reflection, you might be interested to know that it is a harmless mold that grows on the sugar that evaporates from the bourbon casks and sticks to everything in the area. The building at the right was pressure steam cleaned about two years ago.

Shots of moonshine - home grown in Kentucky. Sometimes called White Dog.
