I have long wanted a bigger space in the backyard. The house came with a small cement deck that always felt rather crowded. Last winter a friend fell on the ice and blew out his knee. Herb couldn't get into his house after surgery. So a bunch of us who have beer and wings with Herb on Fridays, built him a ramp to make the house handicap accessible. I decided if I could build a ramp, I could build a deck. Well, Joe and I could build a deck. I took a week off from work the beginning of July and thought we could finish in that much time. It is now October. A small underestimation of the time needed. First we took out an extra tree. (One of the few parts Shea helped us with - he also helped move the cement blocks that hold the posts). Then started the real fun. Making sure the frame was level, square and stable. We got started but then I left on my extended west coast vacation. We got back to work after vacation. The joists were the next big challenge. Once those were hung, putting the top boards on was "relatively" simple. Unfortunately I needed to make another trip to the west coast at this point. But once home again, we made the final push to put up the railing. Yesterday Joe and I hung the last bit of railing and celebrated Kentucky style with a bit of bourbon and chocolate and a hand selfie.
